Regardless of your opinion, The Kardashians, specifically, Kanye and Kim Kardashian-West have influenced the fashion industry in more ways than one and in larger ways than you may realize…and also every other aspect of people's lives to the point that it is a running joke that your voice and demeanor changes after watching so much of KUWTK.
New York Fashion Week is just one month away and the street style (what everyone wears to the shows) is just as important as what goes down the runways. We can have an idea of what to expect to see with the trends going on: croissant bags, chunky tennis shoes, vintage everything…But honestly with the past couple years, the creativity has dwindled out.
You practically have to live under a rock to not know that even the littlest influencers and celebrities are being sent PR packages daily. Now this includes designers and designer dupes, which means this is all we end up seeing on the streets. Often the exact outfits that walked down the runway styled the same way 6 months ago. It is expected, of course, to wear this season's designer to the proper show, but let's show some personal style please.
Styling is why so many have fallen in love with fashion. While, the average girl cannot typically make their own couture gown nor want to…it is all about the styling and accessories that really brings a piece alive and shows one's personal style and even personality. Designers also love to see their work portrayed differently. That is what Ready-To-Wear is all about…not literally taken straight from the runway.
But that is all street wear during fashion week. Street wear on a day-to-day basis is what has truly been influenced by the Kardashians, Kim and Kanye being the biggest couple, of course.
We have seen parts of the 90s come back with slip dresses and scrunchies, the 70s with flare jeans, but also the Yeezy campaigns and Off-White have gotten more attention. With the Kardashians being some of the biggest influencers in society, we can see fashion evolve for this decade. Meaning, people say that trends just recycle every other decade or whatever, but there have been some inventive trends and styles that stand out for this past generation, thanks to Kim Kardashian, but more Kanye West dressing them.
Trends that I love in the past decade include:
I say this to show that the Kardashians affect most people (I can't say everyone) without some even realizing. Those that don’t even glance at Off-White in Nordstrom can still see the simple pieces come together in…preppy clothing, for example. People have obviously done matching and one color since fashion was invented, but not to the extent we see it today. Beyond a suit or all black outfit, we are seeing highlighter yellow head-to-toe…it’s the minimalist idea, but truly started with Kanye West's Yeezy Season 1 and all the Kardashians dressing in it. Pretty Little Thing worked with Kourtney Kardashian and took off, Good American by Khloe Kardashian was created, and Kendall Jenner had the modeling industry. Their influence then spreads to the stores that we shop, but brings new ones to the surface like White Fox, Aritzia, and Kith.
This all to say, we are entering a new generation in a few months…it will be interesting to see what the 20s will be known for.
